Okay, you've gone to dinner
twice and seen three movies. It's time for a change, some variety, some imaginative
places to go and things to do. Here are some great date ideas collected
from all over the place -- including from readers like you:
A short trip away:
- A day at the
races. Whether it's horse races, demolition derbys, dog races or the
The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, there's got to be one near you. The
less you know about racing sport, the more of an adventure it can be.
- Take art supplies to a beach, lake or other picturesque spot and paint side
by side.
- Go to the airport or mall and people watch.
- Do a food court date where you sample from every little food place, making a
full meal. Bring your own doggie bag.
- Go to a craft fair and actually buy something unique.
- Tour a winery, take samples and bring a few bottles home.
- Find a secluded place and have a "photo shoot". Take pictures of
each other. An hour later you can enjoy them.
- Have a video game war at a nearest arcade. …And don’t be intimidated by the
incredible skill of the kids who have been hanging around the arcade since they
were infants.
- Go to an amusement park and try to win something for each other on the midway.
- Go to a high school play, a community band concert, an art show, a house
tour, an air show, a marina, or whatever else your local newspaper says is happening in your town.
- Rent a canoe for two.
- Visit a public garden.
Weather and geography permitting:
- Build a snowman, snow sculpture, or ice castle.
- Get two rain-ponchos so you can take a walk in the rain.
Splash in every puddle. Get wet. Be fearless. (But have dry clothes and a cup of
hot cocoa waiting at home.)
- Go fishing or sailing or swimming or scuba diving.
- Go to the nearest beach or lakefront and bask in the sun. Bring sun screen.
- Using just sand and water, create an astounding work of art at the beach.
- Explore the zoo.
Around town:
- Go bike riding. If available, consider renting a bicycle built for two. Take a picnic with
you.
- Play tennis, badminton or croquet.
- Explore your town on foot.
- Go fly a kite. Hobby stores generally have kite kits. Or build
one from scratch. Learn how on the Internet at Build a Kite.
With others:
- Invite some friends over for a murder mystery party.
- Try to draw each other.
- Have a bula-bula hunt -- an especially
good way to include children. While the person who is "it"
leaves the room, the others hide a household item somewhere in the room.
The person then returns to search for it while the others in the room sing
bula-bula, getting louder as the "it" person gets closer, and softer
as he/she moves away.
At home for two:
- Bake a loaf or two of bread. Sit down together and eat a few slices while it's still warm
and butter melts on it. Then, while it's still fresh, take a loaf with you as a
gift when you visit friends or go to a party.
- Set up a fish tank.
- Cook your date his/her favorite meal.
- Wash and wax one or both of your cars together.
- Play cards, put together a jigsaw puzzle, solve a crossword, play a board game or just hang out together.
